a birthing partnership, we're in it together

Seena Elbaum is a Certified Doula who provides exceptional, compassionate, evidence based care. Her doula practice is nourished by decades of experience in yoga, mindfulness, and counseling women and couples. Throughout the time she works with you, the guidance, education, and comfort is individualized, encouraging and flexible. The relationship begins at some point during pregnancy and continues in to labor, birthing, and beyond.

WHAT IS A DOULA? The word 'doula' comes from the ancient Greek meaning 'a woman who serves'. Today it is used to describe a trained and certified professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother, father/partner and sometimes, other family members, during pregnancy, labor and birth, and in to the postpartum period.

  • understands the emotional, psychological and physical needs of a pregnant woman during pregnancy, throughout labor and birthing, and in to the postpartum period

  • empowers the pregnant woman and her partner to ‘find their voice’ and express their needs

  • educates and encourages the pregnant woman and her partner about how to be the best advocate they can be

  • teaches the pregnant woman various comfort measures for self-care during pregnancy, labor, birthing and beyond

  • teaches the pregnant couple various comfort measures they can use together during labor

  • facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her support team and her care providers

  • educates the pregnant woman and partner about the transition into the fourth trimester

When a doula attends to a birthing mamma throughout pregnancy, labor and delivery:

  • labors are shorter

  • labors and births have fewer complications

  • women are less likely to use pain medication and epidurals

  • women are less likely to have C–sections

  • birth partners are more confident and comfortable

  • babies are healthier

  • breastfeeding is easier

  • women are more likely to have positive feelings about their labor and birth experience
